Digital Communication of Allergy Program

Aims and Objectives

Building connected allergy care through digital health.

Improve the recording, transfer and access of patient allergy and adverse reaction information in electronic health records through engagement with the Australian Digital Health Agency and other relevant organisations.

How are we working towards this?

  • Working with the Australian Digital Health Agency to improve allergy reporting in My Health Record.

  • Engaging with consumers and healthcare professionals to develop resources to improve entered allergy information in My Health Record (with support from Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia and ASCIA).

  • Developing best practice guidelines for the documenting of allergy information.

  • Participating in the Sparked program to ensure critical allergy information is included in electronic health information transfer.

Target Audience

  • Healthcare professionals including clinical allergy/immunology specialists, paediatricians, general practitioners, pharmacists, dietitians and dermatologists.

  • People with an allergy and carers of people with an allergy.

What we have achieved so far

  • Developed factsheets and other resources on how to use My Health Record to record allergy information.

  • Provided expert input into Australian Digital Health Agency initiatives to improve allergy recording in My Health Record

  • Scoped key information and principles for best practice guidelines for allergy information in patient health records.

  • Engaged with key interest holders to identify what should be included in the best practice guidelines.

  • Provided input into the FHIR standard to improve electronic transfer of allergy information.

  • Promoted the importance of accurate allergy information in patient health records through social media communications.

Work in progress

  • Publication of the best practice guidelines for the recording, transfer and access of allergy information in electronic health records
