Over the past couple of months, we have been busy progressing our projects and developing some exciting new resources. 

Food allergen management in food service: 

  • On the 24th September, the All about Allergens for Hospitals online training was launched by the Hon Greg Hunt, Federal Minister for Health. Completion of this training has been an exciting accomplishment for the National Allergy Strategy, and we hope that staff working in hospitals and other health care facilities will undertake the training to help improve food allergen management.
  • Thank you to the National Allergy Strategy food allergy management in healthcare project working group as well as the many key stakeholder who contributed through the consultation process.

  • Our next food allergen management training will be All about Allergens for Schools and ECEC (early childhood education and care). These courses will be available in early 2021.
  • Visit the Food Allergy Aware resource hub which provides links to information for consumers, health professionals, food service staff and staff working in schools and ECEC.

250K youth project

  • NEW eczema animations have been added to the 250K school aged teens and young adult websites. These short animations provide information about how to manage eczema. Nyssa Booth, National Allergy Strategy Social Media and Communications Officer, has once again provided the voiceover for these informative, easy to understand videos!
What is eczema
  • The Connect 250K project allows young people to connect to share experiences through online chat forums. Our Zoom chats with young adults continue to be run every month and our school aged teens chat forums and Zoom chats are also undertaken each month. In addition to this, we also continue our peer mentor training sessions via Zoom.
  • We are planning our next 250K youth camp which we hope to hold in Perth in late February 2021. The aim of the 250K camps is to bring together teens living with severe allergy.

Anaphylaxis prevention and management in school and Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) project

  • The National Allergy Strategy is now in phase 2 and 3 of the stakeholder consultation process.
  • National online surveys for parents of children in school and/or ECEC and for staff working in school and ECEC, was conducted in September and October and we are extremely pleased with the number of responses received.
  • Thank you to our stakeholders who supported the online surveys by distributing them to their members and colleagues. We would also like to thank the many people who completed the surveys.
  • The survey responses will help inform the minimum standards and also guide resource development.
  • Our next stage will be to engage with key stakeholders once we have reviewed all the survey data.
  • The All about Allergens for Schools and ECEC online training (currently under development), will support this project.

My Health Record allergy project

  • We are pleased to advise that we will be continuing to work with the Australian Digital Health Agency in 2020-21.
  • Our new project plan will involve engaging with clinical immunology/allergy specialists and other health professionals working in allergy and consumers and providing allergy input into ADHA resources.
  • Several resources were created in our last project including an informative webinar.

Food allergy prevention project (Nip allergies in the Bub)

  • Don’t forget we now have free downloadable resources to support parents with the important messaging around continuing to feed the common food allergens once introduced:
  • Food and recipe ideas for babies of different ages and stages of eating development to explain how to incorporate the common food allergens into first foods through to toddler and family meals.
  • A new recipe booklet containing a range of recipes which include the common food allergens. There are a range of recipes for the different ages and stages of eating development that give parents ideas and inspiration.

A very successful Nip Allergies in the Bub social media campaign was run through Mamamia advertising and podcasts throughout August 2020.
