My Health Record can provide clinical immunology/allergy specialists and other members of a patient’s healthcare team access to additional health information to support them in caring for their patients. The accessibility of information about a patient’s serious allergies (including food and medication allergies) is an important step to improve patient safety in this area.
As well as allergy information, a patient's My Health Record might also contain:
- Diagnostic imaging reports
- Prescription and dispensing information
- Hospital discharge summaries
Most healthcare professionals can use their computer system to upload an event summary or specialist letter to their patient’s My Health Record. Information that could be added includes test results, current allergies, management plan, allergen immunotherapy or other treatments. The following resources have been developed for clinical immunology/allergy specialists and other healthcare professionals working in allergy, to support their use of My Health Record for patients with allergy.

On 14 November 2020 Dr William Smith (Clinical immunology/allergy specialist) and Dr Kathy Rainbird (Australian Digital Health Agency) gave a joint presentation about the benefits of My Health Record for allergy communication at the ASCIA Western Australian Immunology hybrid meeting.
On 31 March 2022 Dr William Smith (Clinical immunology/allergy specialist) and Dr Kathy Rainbird (Australian Digital Health Agency) gave a 30 minute presentation about how to upload allergy information to My Health Record directly from your clinical software. The webinar includes a step-through demonstration of uploading an event summary and specialist letter using Genie software. This webinar is relevant to specialists using a range of conformant clinical software products.

The National Allergy Council encourages people with an allergy (and their carers) to add information about serious and life-threatening allergies, if this information is missing in their My Health Record. We have developed the following guides in consultation with ASCIA members on the Working Group and Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia. If your practice or hospital clinical information system does not currently upload patient information into My Health Record, you can support your patients to add the information themselves by providing them with a copy of these guides.

How to add allergy information into My Health Record: A guide for people with an allergy and their carers provides step-by-step instructions to correctly enter, view and update their allergy information (if they have been confirmed not allergic). There is a section for their doctor or specialist to write the substance and reaction type, so they know the correct wording to add.
Your patients can securely view the health information in their record through the My Health App. This includes allergies, medicines, immunisations as well as COVID-19 pathology results.

Your patients can choose to have their prescription sent to their mobile phone instead of receiving a paper prescription. They can also set up an Active Script List which lists all of their prescriptions on their mobile phone.
