The National Allergy Council is excited to introduce allergy assist™ – a free, national online service providing rural doctors with expert allergy education and support.

Developed in partnership with the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) and funded by the Australian Government, Department of Health and Aged Care, allergy assist™ addresses an important part of the National Allergy Council’s Shared Care for Allergy project – improving access to quality allergy care, particularly for people living in rural, regional and remote areas.

What is allergy assistTM?

The allergy assist™ pilot program is based on the success of ACRRM’s Tele-Derm platform and is designed to support rural doctors by providing timely specialist guidance on allergic conditions.

Through expert advice, clinical resources and professional development opportunities, this service empowers General Practitioners (GPs) and Rural Generalists to confidently diagnose, treat and manage allergies within their communities. By enhancing local expertise, allergy assist™ aims to help reduce wait times for specialist care and reduce patient travel by reducing unnecessary referrals and also support those patients through appropriate referral where required.

To evaluate its success, the National Allergy Council is conducting the National Allergy Advice Platform study and part of the allergy assist™ program. This study has been approved by the UWA Human Research Ethics Committee (Approval Number: 2025/ET000027).

What does allergy assist™ offer?

  • Online advice from adult and paediatric allergy specialists within 48 hours.
  • CPD opportunities and a network of healthcare professionals.
  • Educational resources, case studies, and clinical tools.
  • Invitations to exclusive webinars on key allergy topics.

Who is allergy assist™ for?

The pilot of allergy assist™ will be available to ACRRM members who are predominantly GPs and Rural Generalists working outside of major cities. The online platform will be hosted on the ACRRM online learning management system and accessible to all ACRRM members. Rural doctors who are not ACRRM members can also apply for access.

How will allergy assist™ improve care?

  • Improved patient satisfaction, with patients receiving timely and accurate diagnosis and management.
  • Reduced healthcare inequities with greater access to quality allergy care for patients in regional and remote areas.
  • Upskilled workforce where doctors in rural areas will become more confident and capable in allergy care.
  • Local management of cases where possible reduces strain on specialists and tertiary care facilities and resources.
