May 2019

The National Allergy Strategy is continuing to progress a number of projects and engaging with key stakeholders.

Nip allergies in the Bub

Nip allergies in the Bub

We are pleased to announce that the Nip allergies in the Bub website was a finalist in the 2019 Australian Web Awards. Whilst our website didn’t win the award, we are very proud to have been named as one of three finalists in the Not-for-Profit category of the awards.

Nip allergies in the Bub has also received funding from the Australian Government for the national roll-out of the project. Resources are being updated based on stakeholder and end-user feedback in preparation for the national roll-out in late June 2019. Visit the website: www.preventallergies.org.au

250K youth project

Over the past few months we have been progressing with an update of the 250K youth project website. COMING SOON - a new section for young adults has been created and we have refreshed the homepage of the original website targeting school-aged teens. These resources have been updated and created through engagement with young people living with severe allergy.

With the updating of the websites, chat forums engaging with young people will be able to commence. We look forward to ongoing chat forums to support young people in managing their allergies, particularly food allergies. The chat forums will also form an important part of our peer mentor program.

Food service project

We are now in our final stages of stakeholder consultation for the new food allergen management training – All about Allergens: The next step for cooks and chefs. The two new courses - general food service and camp food service - will provide education beyond the level of information provided in the current All about Allergens course and is specifically for cooks and chefs. A chef focus group session has helped to inform the training content along with stakeholder review and consultation. These courses will have interactive elements including video animations.

Shared Care Model for allergy in Australia

Shared care model for allergy in AustraliaThe Shared Care Model scoping project has now engaged with stakeholders including consumers via a national online survey as well as a face to face meeting. The face to face meeting was recently held in Sydney and was well attended by health professionals and consumers, including those living and working in rural and remote areas. We were pleased to support rural consumers and health professionals in being able to attend and participate in the meeting.

The face to face meeting has helped us to develop and refine the proposed principles of a shared care model for allergy. We were also able to identify key issues in current allergy service delivery and the health professional needs to improve the health and quality of life for consumers living with allergy.
